5 Tips for Encouraging Creativity in Children
Showing children new materials to work with is a great way for inspiring creativity.
Creativity requires the child’s own thoughts and ideas. Discussion with an adult helps to broaden their knowledge, not just with what they are creating but also learning about the focus of the piece.
Inspiration given to the child by an adult could be a book, a photo or even someone else’s work but….from there the child can create something of their own with the materials on hand. So from this, what they see, will and can be adapted.
Some people would call this messing. But messing and experimenting is learning. Each little piece of knowledge acquired by messing builds up, enabling the child to have a several ideas and processes that could be applied to many forms of art and craft.
Hopefully, instilling a habit, something that will come about naturally - to problem solve to create the desired outcome. Mistakes will happen, which if the child is encouraged to persevere, is another part of being creative.
If a child is given a kit or a toy which really doesn’t inspire the child to do anything and the toy does all the doing, boredom will soon kick in and the child has not learnt much other than to watch or follow.

The term children’s art and craft covers many areas. Stopping to consider what is art, what is craft is an even broader subject, not only in relation to children’s activities but also in relation to the subjects themselves.
When looking to encourage creativity in children, consider how much creativity there is in a craft kit where each child will finish the session with a piece of work just the same as the child he is sitting beside.
This is not to be knocked though, children will no doubt be proud of what what they have made, have a sense of achievement and this is great for building self esteem.
In order for children to be creative in the future, there is also a need for children to learn skills, techniques, properties of materials and how to use tools and equipment.
Creativity in it true meaning is not directly copying someone else’s ideas or following the instructions from a kit, that is another skill in itself and one enjoyed by many, for example, knitting patterns and food recipes.
True creativity comes from taking ideas from the world and intermingling with thoughts and experiences to create something new.
